As you tell your own story regarding impressions and courses changed, you illustrate the point that Zinn and Salinger belong in a young man's canon. Not that they can't be enjoyed by forty- or fifty-somethings coming to them the first time but by then tastes and outlook have been mostly decided.
As decidedly unique their own lives were, it seems that in their most famous works, they were equally determined to sniff out the phonies. And when you're 19 and you don't know who you are yet, these are bread crumbs to a thought process that will serve an individual well in life-- 1 part skepticism 1 part humanity 1 part truth, no ice, stirred.

Jon, You won! You've restored my faith in man. I should've expected it from you of all people...of course it's Clarke rather than Sagan who said that... I probably should stop planting landmines in my paragraphs, but it's just too tempting sometimes. Keep the light alive!

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
- Arthur C. Clarke, "Profiles of The Future", 1961 (Clarke's third law)

I'm interested, what's the similar Sagan quote?
