Hasegawa Osamu: an interview with a remarkable man. How much more meaningful than the endless trash of ordinary publications. Japan needs more men like this.
I am a Canadian, I am a guitar maker, I live in Hokkaido with my wife and our son. Our son is the smartest kid in his class, and he is sensitive and kind. But he has problems. I am sure if he were stupid and violent like other kids it would be more easy for him. Teachers and the system make no effort, they just want him to be like all the others.
Now more than ever I want him not to think of himself first as a Japanese, but first as a human being. The State has no virtue by itself. I have lived in various countries and have traveled. I have seen the suffering of war and discrimination in every place, and again here in Japan, discrimination against the Indigenous people. They are called Ainu. I think of them as the First People of Japan.
May they survive and live with pride and dignity .
With respect , James Frieson
